The National Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee started with nine contestants in 1925. Today, the National Spelling Bee boasts of more than 240 worldwide sponsors.
The Jersey Journal is the local organizer of the annual Hudson County Spelling Bee. With more than 600 overall attendees, area schools will be represented by their champion spellers, one of whom will win an all-expense-paid week at the Scripps-Howard finals in Washington, D.C.
The purpose of the Hudson County Spelling Bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn language concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.
Past community sponsors of the annual Hudson County Spelling Bee have included Fidelity Investments and Hudson Community College. Sponsors such as these provide gifts and other educational prizes to the winners.
