In short, Newspapers in Education, known as NIE, is a program in which teachers use The Jersey Journal as a teaching tool in the classroom. The newspaper can be used to teach a variety of subjects at any grade level.
With The Jersey Journal's NIE program, students are not only reading about world events, they are reading about local news in Hudson County. By understanding their local environment, they develop a sense of responsibility that matures as they become the future citizens and business leaders of Hudson County.
How Much Does It Cost?
The newspapers are donated by corporate and private sponsors,
and are provided to the classrooms at no cost to the school
or to teachers.
I've never used newspapers with my students. How do I
know where to start?
We'll provide all of the information you need. You may attend
a training workshop for credit, or request reproducible instructional
materials to meet your student's needs.
The Jersey Journal puts you in contact with Kay O'Malley, a Newspaper In Education specialist who is available to guide you through the process. Kay O'Malley is a former classroom teacher with over 20 years of experience in NIE.
To "talk NIE," call Kay at (732) 974-2113 or email her at Kayonie@aol.com
Help your students develop a life-long love of reading and understand the world around them.
